First: stop. Do not rebuild.

If your RAID shows degraded, offline or a drive failure light, the single most important step is to leave it alone.

• Do not start a rebuild. If a second drive is weak, the rebuild will fail and corrupt the parity.
• Do not replace the failed drive yet. Note its slot position and leave it in place.
• Do not reinitialise, reformat or “re-create” the array — this writes new metadata over the old.
• Do not run chkdsk or any repair utility on the volume.

How CNC recovers a RAID array

1. Intake and labelling — every drive logged with its slot position, controller model and RAID level recorded.
2. Drive-by-drive imaging — each disk is cloned sector by sector to a healthy drive. Failing drives are imaged with hardware imagers that work around bad sectors. Nothing is ever done on the originals.
3. Parameter reconstruction — stripe size, drive order, parity rotation and offset are determined from the images. This is the specialist step; a wrong stripe size produces garbage.
4. Virtual rebuild — the array is assembled virtually from the images and the file system is mounted read-only.
5. Extraction and verification — data is copied to a new drive and checked. You receive a file list to confirm before payment.

NAS recovery — Synology, QNAP, WD MyCloud

Consumer and small-office NAS units run Linux software RAID (mdadm) with LVM and Btrfs or ext4 on top. Failures come from a bad firmware update, an accidentally deleted volume, or a drive that dies while the second is already weak. Bring the whole NAS with the drives in place — the drive order matters for reconstruction.

Server RAID — Dell, HP, IBM

Hardware RAID controllers (PERC, Smart Array, ServeRAID) store the array configuration on the drives themselves.
