Why laptop hinges really break

The metal hinge itself rarely snaps. What fails is what it is screwed into. On most thin laptops the hinge is held by small brass inserts set in plastic. Over time the plastic cracks around the inserts, the hinge starts to lift, and each opening makes it worse. The common triggers:

• Opening the lid from one corner. All the force goes through one hinge. Open from the middle of the lid instead.
• A hinge that has become stiff. Stiff hinges pass the force straight into the mounts.
• Drops and bag pressure. A laptop dropped on a corner, or squeezed in a full backpack, often cracks a mount without showing outside.
• Age. On older laptops the plastic becomes brittle, especially in a hot Delhi summer.

Signs you should stop using the laptop now

• A gap is opening between the base and the bottom cover near the hinge.
• You hear a crack or click when you open or close the lid.
• The screen wobbles or does not stay at the angle you set.
• The display flickers, goes dark or shows lines when you move the lid — this means the display cable is already being pinched.

Can the hinge be fixed without replacing the screen?
