MacBook Not Turning On? Checks, Causes and Repair Cost in Delhi

Before you start: protect your data

On MacBooks with Apple silicon (M1 to M5), the storage is soldered to the logic board and encrypted. The data can usually be read only by getting that same board working again. Two things follow from this:

• Do not choose any option that says Erase or Restore while trying to revive the Mac. A restore wipes the storage.

Five checks to do at home

1. Charger, cable and socket

Use the Apple charger that came with the Mac, or a USB-C Power Delivery charger of the same or higher wattage. Phone chargers are too weak to start most MacBooks. Try a different wall socket and a different cable. On MagSafe 3 cables the small light turns amber while charging and green when full. 2. Leave it on charge for 30 minutes

A fully drained battery can take several minutes before the Mac shows any sign of life. Leave it connected for 30 minutes without pressing anything, then press the power key once.

3. Is it on, but the screen is black?

Look for signs that the Mac is running: keyboard backlight, the Caps Lock light when you press Caps Lock, fan noise on MacBook Pro models, or the startup sound. Press the brightness-up key a few times. If you have a monitor or TV with the right cable, connect it. If the picture appears on the external screen, the Mac is fine and the fault is in the display or its cable.

4. Force a restart

On M1 to M5 MacBooks, press and hold the power or Touch ID key for 10 seconds, release it, wait a few seconds, then press it once. 5. Look for liquid or a swollen battery

If anything was spilled on the keyboard in the last few days, stop here. Do not charge it and do not keep pressing the power key — current flowing through a wet board causes most of the damage. Also check whether the trackpad has become hard to click or the bottom case has lifted. Both are signs of a swollen battery. Stop charging it and bring it in.

Logic board repair: what to expect

When the fault is on the logic board, an Apple service centre usually replaces the whole board. That is expensive, and on M1 to M5 MacBooks a new board does not carry your old data.
