What actually goes wrong — by brand

HP printers

HP DeskJet and OfficeJet inkjets most often come in with a clogged print head after sitting unused for a few weeks, or a cartridge the printer refuses to recognise after a refill. HP LaserJet models — P1005, M1136, M401, M426 — wear out the paper pick-up roller (prints pull two sheets or none), then the fuser (streaks, smudges that wipe off, “Fuser error 50.x”). The formatter board fails rarely but is the expensive fix.

Epson EcoTank

The L-series is reliable until the waste ink counter fills. The printer stops with “Service required” or “Ink pad is at the end of its service life”. This needs both a software counter reset and a physical pad replacement — a reset alone is temporary and ink will eventually leak inside. Clogged heads after long idle periods are the second most common Epson fault.

Canon PIXMA and imageCLASS

Canon inkjets show numbered errors — 5100 (carriage blocked), 5200 (print head overheating), B200 (print head failure). 5100 and 5200 are usually cleaning or minor mechanical fixes. B200 often means a new print head. Canon laser models mainly need drum and toner service.

Brother, Ricoh, Kyocera

Brother MFC and HL laser models are workhorses that mostly need drum units and pick-up rollers. Ricoh and Kyocera multifunction photocopiers in offices need scheduled drum and fuser service — CNC covers these under a printer AMC rather than per-call repair, which works out cheaper for offices with two or more machines.

Repair or replace? A simple rule

Compare the repair quote to half the price of an equivalent new printer.

• Repair under 50% of replacement — repair. Rollers, print heads, pads, most laser drums fall here.
• Repair over 50% of replacement — usually replace, unless the printer is a high-volume laser or a wide-format model where the replacement is expensive anyway.
• Printer over 7 years old with a formatter or motor fault — replace. Parts get scarce and a second fault is likely.
