1. The 5 Types of CCTV Cameras

📷 Dome Camera

Dome cameras are housed in a compact hemisphere, usually ceiling-mounted. The camera's pointing direction is not obvious from below — making them more discreet than bullet cameras. The dome housing also provides vandal resistance (vandal-proof dome models use impact-resistant polycarbonate or metal).

✅ Best for

  • Office interiors, reception, corridors
  • Retail shop floors
  • Banks and ATM lobbies
  • Any space where discretion matters
  • Vandal-prone areas (petrol pumps, public spaces)

❌ Less suitable for

  • Long-range outdoor monitoring (use bullet instead)
  • Areas without a ceiling mounting point

🔭 Bullet Camera

Bullet cameras are cylindrical and wall or pole-mounted. They are clearly visible, which acts as a deterrent. Their elongated body accommodates a larger lens, giving them better long-range performance and typically more powerful infrared night vision. Most are weatherproof (IP66/IP67 rated) for outdoor use.

✅ Best for

  • Car parks, driveways, gates
  • Perimeter monitoring — walls, fences
  • Long corridors and loading bays
  • Any area where deterrence visibility matters
  • Outdoor use in all weather

❌ Less suitable for

  • Discreet indoor monitoring
  • Areas where aesthetics matter (hotel lobbies, boardrooms)

🔄 PTZ Camera (Pan-Tilt-Zoom)

PTZ cameras can be remotely rotated (pan), tilted up and down, and zoomed in optically — either by a human operator or automatically by AI tracking. A single PTZ can cover a large area that would otherwise need four or more fixed cameras. They are significantly more expensive and are overkill for most small offices.

✅ Best for

  • Large open areas — factory floors, warehouses, malls
  • Car parks where tracking a vehicle matters
  • Any site with a manned control room
  • Supplementing fixed cameras at chokepoints

❌ Less suitable for

  • Unmanned small offices (no one to operate the PTZ)
  • Budget installations (3–5× cost of fixed cameras)

👁️ Fisheye Camera (360°)

A fisheye camera uses an ultra-wide lens to capture a 180° or 360° view in a single image. The footage is dewarped by the NVR or camera itself into a flat, usable image. One fisheye camera can cover a full room that would otherwise need 3–4 dome cameras — reducing cabling and hardware cost.

✅ Best for

  • Open-plan offices, showrooms, restaurants
  • Reception lobbies and waiting areas
  • Any space where a single ceiling camera can see everything

❌ Less suitable for

  • Long, narrow corridors
  • Outdoor use (most are indoor-rated)
  • Situations requiring close-up facial identification at distance

📦 Box / Body Camera

Box cameras have a separate, interchangeable lens and are used where a standard camera can't do the job — extreme long-range identification, very low light environments, or industrial settings. Rarely needed in a typical office. You would typically see these in traffic surveillance, license plate capture, or specialist industrial monitoring.

Best for: specialised and industrial use. Not recommended for standard office or retail installations.

2. DVR vs NVR — Which Recording System?

The cameras are only half the system. The DVR or NVR is the brain — it records footage, manages storage, and provides remote viewing. Choosing the wrong one means recabling the whole installation later.

For most Delhi NCR offices: A DVR system with analogue HD cameras covers 95% of requirements at 40–50% lower cost than an equivalent NVR system. Unless you need AI analytics, 8MP+ cameras throughout, or are planning a 50+ camera network across multiple buildings, start with DVR.

3. Analogue HD vs IP Cameras

This is the question behind "which type of CCTV system uses analogue cameras" and "what is an IP camera". Both are commonly called CCTV. The difference is how they transmit video.

Analogue HD Camera

  • Sends compressed HD video over coaxial cable
  • Needs a separate power cable (12V DC or PoC)
  • Connects to a DVR
  • Resolution: up to 8MP / 4K
  • Lower cost per camera, robust and simple
  • Works over existing coax — no recabling if upgrading

IP Camera

  • Converts video to digital data internally
  • Sends data + receives power over CAT6 Ethernet (PoE)
  • Connects to an NVR via network switch
  • Resolution: typically 2MP to 12MP+
  • Higher cost, but single cable to each camera
  • Easier to place cameras far from the NVR (via network)

Practical implication: If you're building a new installation from scratch, either works well. If you're upgrading an existing coax installation, analogue HD cameras reuse the existing cable — major cost saving. If you're installing in a building with structured CAT6 already in place (most modern commercial buildings), IP cameras become very cost-competitive.

4. Key Features of a CCTV System

Resolution

2MP gives a clear image at distances up to 15m. 4MP covers 30m. 8MP/4K is for number plate or facial identification at distance. Most offices are well-served by 2MP cameras.

Night Vision

Infrared (IR) night vision shows black-and-white footage in total darkness. Colour night vision (Hikvision ColorVu, CP Plus StarLight) captures colour in very low light — better for identifying clothing. Choose colour if your area has some ambient lighting.

Standard CCTV records on motion only (saving HDD space). Modern AI motion detection distinguishes people and vehicles from trees, rain, and animals — reducing false alerts.

Practical note for Indian offices: Most of the IoT and AI features above require IP cameras on an NVR — not analogue cameras on a DVR. If you want smart features now or in the next 2 years, plan your cabling for IP from the start, even if you initially install a lower-cost DVR system. Retroactively changing cable type is expensive.

CCTV systems fall into two main categories by recording technology: analogue (DVR-based) and IP/digital (NVR-based). Within each, cameras are classified by form factor: dome cameras (discreet, ceiling-mount), bullet cameras (long-range, directional), PTZ cameras (pan-tilt-zoom, operator-controlled), fisheye cameras (360° single-camera coverage), and box cameras (large sensor, interchangeable lens for specialised use). Most Delhi offices use dome or bullet cameras with a DVR for 4–16 camera installations.

In common usage, "CCTV" now refers to both analogue and IP camera systems used for security monitoring.
